From decomposition to new form
The exhibition, “Limitless palette of emotions and imagination,” was the realisation of the mission of the Art Plains Foundation: to promote exceptional contemporary art and to fully integrate the perspectives of artists whose voices often remain insufficiently heard in the public sphere.
This exhibition aimed to underscore the unique potential of artists with disabilities, incorporating their creative output into a broader, democratic discourse on the essence of art.
The display showcased a rich body of work by 33 exceptional artists who develop their talents in community self-help centres, social welfare homes,
and occupational therapy workshops. The pieces were selected from among the laureates and participants of several editions of the nationwide visual arts competition, “The World of Nikifors” (Świat Nikiforów), organised as part of the inspiring social programme Nikifory by the organisation Change4Good.
The artists employed an astonishing variety of techniques, ranging from acrylic and watercolour painting, through subtle wax graphics, pastels, batik, to intricate collage. The subject matter was equally broad and intimate, focusing on deeply personal experiences (“My World” – Mój świat), dreams (“Dreams” – Marzenia), and universal themes.
The works were characterised by profound sincerity and authenticity—devoid of calculation and dominated by genuine, unfeigned feelings. Here, art served as a wonderful communication tool, allowing viewers to explore the inner worlds of the creators, full of fleeting impressions, deep reflections, melancholy, and expression.
The virtual spaces of the Melete Gallery allowed visitors to navigate this “palette” freely, discovering intimate portraits, elaborate genre scenes, landscapes drawn from memory and imagination, and even fascinating maps. The exhibition was accompanied by an online discussion panel featuring the artists, therapists, a representative of the Nikifory programme, and the exhibition’s curators.
